Professur AI Design Engineering (m/w/d)

The professor will lead the AI Design Engineering field, focusing on generative AI, agentic systems, and AI-supported content creation in both teaching and applied research. Responsibilities include developing curricula, managing AI-driven workflows, and contributing to the university's academic self-administration.

Responsibilities

• Represent the AI Design Engineering area with focus on generative AI, content creation, and agentic AI for media and marketing applications in teaching and applied research.
• Develop and deliver modules on generative AI, multimodal content creation, and AI‑driven media production for bachelor and master programs.
• Design and orchestrate autonomous AI‑agent systems for creative and communicative processes, including task planning, agent communication, tool integration, and human‑in‑the‑loop control.
• Create AI engineering workflows: prompt engineering, automated production pipelines, integration of AI models, APIs, knowledge bases, and Retrieval‑Augmented Generation (RAG).
• Lead Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and AI‑based visibility projects, optimizing digital content for AI‑enhanced search and recommendation systems.
• Teach foundational courses in media and communication design and digital media production.
• Participate in academic self‑governance, research projects, and continuous development of study programmes.

Requirements

• PhD or equivalent qualification in Design, Communication Design, Media Informatics, Creative Technologies, Media Management, Marketing or related field (or a habilitation according to § 36 HG NRW).
• Several years of professional experience in creative agencies, design studios, or media/marketing production.
• Proven experience applying generative AI and modern AI technologies in practice and developing AI‑driven content and design solutions.
• Hands‑on experience with AI‑based content creation, AI agents, multi‑agent systems, automated creative workflows, and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).
• Teaching experience or strong interest in modern higher‑education didactics, able to deliver courses in German and English.
• Ability to contribute to academic self‑administration and take on scientific management responsibilities.
• Willingness to teach evening or weekend classes for part‑time programs.
