Senior Civil/Structural Substation Design Engineer, Design Engineering

The Senior Civil/Structural Substation Design Engineer will lead the design, permitting, and construction oversight of HV/MV substations and grid connections for global data centers. This role involves managing external design consultants, ensuring project quality and budget adherence, and providing technical expertise for civil and structural design components.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain basis of design, prototype design, and template specifications for HV/MV substations and grid connections
• Manage portfolio of HV/MV design projects and evaluate geotechnical investigation reports
• Create, review, and release HV/MV RFPs for external design consultants
• Collaborate with HV & Electrical Engineers to produce substation site layouts during data‑center master‑planning
• Manage external CSA design consultants through design and construction administration phases
• Act as Owner’s Representative during design phase, ensuring timely, on‑budget delivery and quality
• Review civil, structural, and architectural engineering designs, evaluate options, and assess assumptions
• Prepare and execute building permit strategies for substations and grid connections
• Liaise with authorities having jurisdiction and energy utilities for permitting and design approvals
• Coordinate with MEP engineers, quantity surveyors, construction managers, and technical programme managers
• Lead initiatives to improve cost, quality, schedule, and consistency
• Travel up to 25% for site assessments, consultant selection, design meetings, and construction reviews

Requirements

• 6+ years of data‑center design, construction, operations, or facility maintenance experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field
• Experience researching new designs, technologies, and construction methods for data‑center equipment and facilities
• Professional Engineering or Architectural License (preferred)
• Knowledge of building codes and regulations for your region (preferred)
• Ability to read, interpret, and create construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents
