The Manager, Design Engineering is responsible for managing and developing design drawings and technical documentation for data center commercial projects. They also coordinate capacity planning, support pre-sales technical engagements, and ensure adherence to design guidelines and safety standards.
Responsibilities
- Processing, managing, and developing the design drawings and documentation for all commercial projects within designated data centres and support across other data centres in sub-region where needed
- Assisting the Platform Engineering team in producing contract drawings for Pre-Sales support and delivering them to the Sales team as part of contract documentation
- Provide an assessment on power, cooling, and square meter availability at the Initial Quote phase
- Creating technical designs for customer lifecycle (new and existing) activities and amendments to ensure customer requirements and design artefacts are completed within agreed parameters
- Generating a Technical Handover document, including Computer-Aided Design (CAD) layouts, customer rack layouts, floor layout plans, and Bill of Materials for installations
- Ensuring adherence to the Whitespace Design and Engineering Guidelines, following corporate design principles related to standardization of power, cooling, and space in the designs
- Creating Work Orders to instruct Implementation Managers, remote hands and vendors on task execution against solution design
- Processing all design activities for customer life cycle orders (day two) as it relates to MACDs and partial/full terminations
- Updating facility floor plans using Auto-Computer Aided Design (ACAD) and Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) software
- Updating and maintaining inventory systems (e.g., FNT, OpsView, etc.) for Space and Power to ensuring data integrity and completeness
- Update connectivity and cable tie records using DCIM (Data Center Infrastructure Management) software
- Updating records of customers’ power circuits using company DCIM software
- Adhering to the QHSSE (Quality, Health, Safety, Security & Environment) Responsibilities Matrix
- Providing support during audits at DLR sites, ensuring data integrity and alignment issues
- Taking responsibility for administrative and documentation management within the Platform Engineering function
- Determine customer opportunity density cooling limits and perform CFD when needed
- Coordinate with the Capacity Planning team for the need to add incremental space, power and connectivity installed capacity to support new customer transactions (Capacity Management)
- Managing ROFR/ROFO space in coordination with commercial management team (Capacity Management)
- Assisting Solution Engineers with pre-sales technical inquiries and design activities
- Engage in training programs, workshops and self-directed learning to enhance skills and knowledge relevant to the role
- Support sub-regional initiatives and activities to be an effective member of the cross-functional team
- Engaging in customer interactions to support Sales and Solutions Engineers when required
- Identify opportunities for process enhancement, suggesting improvements that contribute to efficiency and effectiveness
- Assist in onboarding new team members, sharing knowledge and helping them integrate into the team and company culture
- Assist with sustainability and environmental initiatives, aligning with the company’s commitment to responsible practice
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, preferably electrical or mechanical
- Significant years of engineering experience in mission-critical environments, preferably including data centers
- Strong knowledge of Auto-Computer Aided Design (ACAD)
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Visio, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, Explorer) and/or equivalent
- Experience of data centre design, business critical infrastructure management and data centre environment awareness
- Electrical, Mechanical, Network or Operational data centre experience is a benefit
- Rigorous attention to detail and application of standards and processes
- Must be a self-starter, proactive, flexible, and able to work within deadlines
- Ability to work on multiple tasks/projects
- Strong problem-solving skills, including the ability to resolve customer design issues effectively
- Must be detail oriented with excellent communications, interpersonal and oral/written presentation skills
- Ability to travel and work onsite
- Customer centricity and natural drive to work with other areas of the business to provide the customer with the best possible outcome
