Staff/Principal Product Designer (USDS)

Product designers at Skylight are responsible for understanding problem spaces, identifying opportunities, and developing solutions using a lean-agile approach. They engage in continuous research throughout the product life cycle and work collaboratively with product managers and engineers to ensure the product team builds the right thing.

Responsibilities

• Work alongside product managers, engineers, and other practitioners on product strategy decisions.
• Plan and conduct research to inform strategic product and design direction.
• Define end-to-end flows with information architecture, systems thinking, design principles, and common design patterns.
• Create simple and elegant user interfaces or evolve existing visual systems.
• Apply a design process with frequent iterations and feedback.
• Create mockups and design artifacts to help the team understand the product vision.
• Balance user and business needs within an agile working environment.
• Uphold human-centered design principles and evangelize its value.
• Promote empathy for the general public and government workers.

Requirements

• Able to plan, synthesize, and share out generative and evaluative user research.
• Can define scalable, end-to-end interaction flows with key design principles.
• Can create simple, elegant user interfaces through visual design elements.
• Understand different design processes and can produce documentation for storytelling.
• Can contribute to product strategy decisions by aligning design processes with lean/agile methodologies.
• Can facilitate and communicate well, including communicating design rationale.
• Ability to demonstrate product design leadership.
• Ability to work successfully within a professional services environment.
