The Braille Tactile Graphic Designer prepares raised-line tactile graphic representations of print images while adhering to BANA requirements. This role also involves collaborating with team members and maintaining project logs to ensure accuracy and accessibility of content.

Responsibilities

  • Stay current on all changes and new rules in accordance with BANA
  • Prepare error-free, raised-line tactile graphic representations of print images
  • Follow current BANA-approved requirements, Agency Decisions, and program specifications to ensure the content is accessible and appropriate
  • Inspect jobs for accuracy prior to submitting for proofreading
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive knowledge of tactile graphics equipment
  • Perform a quality check on produced tactile graphics
  • Collaborate with other Development team members to resolve code and formatting questions and maintain accurate documentation of decisions
  • Maintain accurate project logs and provide regular status updates to Program Leads and Leadership
  • Manage and complete multiple tasks accurately and on-schedule
  • Regularly attend and actively participate in team meetings to discuss progress, address issues, and collaborate on solutions
  • Support ongoing research into the development or production of tactile graphics, other braille material, and new braille technologies used in assessments and provide assistance as needed in support of Pearson programs and services
  • Support the growth and success of the team at large by participating in initiatives to build efficiencies and growth within the individual role or team
  • Follow all company policies, procedures, and business ethics codes

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED (required)
  • Minimum of 3 years intermediate digital graphic design experience
  • Successfully complete all lessons of the Unified English Braille Accessible Braille Training Course (within 30 business days)
  • Literary Lessons 1-31
  • Introduction to Math Lessons 1-10
  • Advanced Math Lessons 1-10
  • Guidelines and Standards for Tactile Graphics, 2022 (competency within 1 year)
  • National Library Service Braille Transcribing Certification (within 2 years)
  • National Braille Association Braille Formats Certification (within 3 years)
  • The Nemeth Braille Code for Mathematics and Science Notation, 2022 (competency within 3 years)
  • National Library Service Mathematics Braille Transcribing Certification (within 4 years)
  • Complete required training and internal continuing education regarding software, formats, and codes
  • Strong knowledge of the English language including grammar and spelling
  • Intermediate proficiency in the use of software packages related to office operations, including but not limited to Microsoft 365 and Adobe Acrobat DC
  • Advanced proficiency in the use of graphic design software (e.g., CorelDRAW, Adobe Illustrator)
  • Working knowledge of the use and daily service of multifunction or UV printers
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently with little to no supervision
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal/teamwork, and communication (written and verbal) skills
  • Keen attention to detail in all aspects of job
  • Perform all tasks with a sense of urgency
