The Graphic Designer is responsible for creating visually appealing and effective design solutions across multiple platforms while ensuring alignment with brand guidelines. This role involves collaboration with various teams to develop creative concepts and deliver high-quality graphics for marketing materials.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with senior designers, the marketing team, other departments and cross-functional teams to develop creative concepts and deliverables.
  • Designs and produces high-quality graphics for digital campaigns, websites, social media, presentations, print collateral, and other marketing materials.
  • Ensures all creative outputs are consistent with County brand guidelines and visual identity.
  • Gathers information about the intended message and advises clients on strategies to effectively reach target audiences.
  • Develops initial design drafts for print and digital use, including selection of color, imagery, typography, and layout.
  • Presents design mock-ups, incorporates feedback, and prepares final files for production and distribution.
  • Assists in photo editing, illustration, and layout design.
  • Photographs and/or videos events and individuals; selects suitable images and organizes files for future use.
  • Prepares design files for print and digital production, ensuring accuracy and technical compliance.
  • Works with internal/external partners such as the Macomb County print shop, commercial printers, advertising vendors, and branded merchandise suppliers.
  • Maintains an organized library of finished products and assets.
  • Stays up to date on design trends, tools, and best practices to continually improve output.
  • Manages multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
  • Supports marketing and communication campaigns, as well as special projects, under the Department of Planning and Economic Development.
  • Delivers and picks-up materials and equipment as assigned.
  • Operates an automobile to perform assigned job functions.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A minimum of either: An Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Graphic Design, Design and Layout or a directly related field; High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalent with a Certificate from an accredited college or university in Graphic Design, Design and Layout or a directly related field; Two (2) years professional experience working as a graphic designer.
  • Possession of a valid Michigan driver’s license and operable, insured automobile for authorized travel.

  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Lightroom, etc.)
  • Event photography, taking photos and editing
  • Typography, layout, and color theory
  • Designing for both print and digital platforms
  • Web and social media design best practices
  • Microsoft 360, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Canva
  • Motion graphics or video editing
  • Design & Branding
  • Branding and logo design for programs, initiatives, or campaigns
  • Developing creative themes for special initiatives
  • Infographics, maps, and branded merchandise ("swag")
  • Print Design (Booklets, brochures, flyers, postcards, invitations, advertisements, vehicle wraps; Billboards, signage, and other large-format print)
  • Digital Design (Social media graphics, digital advertisements and billboards; Presentation design (PowerPoint and other platforms))
  • Photography/Video (Event photography, including capturing subjects in varied lighting environments; Image selection and editing for publication and archival purposes; Some video editing experience)
  • Time management, organizational, and communication skills
  • Approach assignments creatively while aligning with client goals and target audiences
  • Produce professional, visually appealing designs that adhere to established brand guidelines
  • Work effectively both independently and collaboratively with cross-departmental teams
  • Prioritize multiple tasks, manage projects, and meet deadlines consistently
  • Adapt to client feedback with professionalism, respect, and constructive solutions
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, administrators, department heads, colleagues, outside agencies, and the public

  • Effectively speak, write and understand the English language
  • Effectively speak, write and understand a language other than English is preferred
  • Understand and carry out oral and/or written instructions
  • Accurately organize and maintain paper documents and electronic files
